The Importance of EPA and DHA for Children

EPA and DHA are essential fatty acids that the body cannot make and must be provided by other means. EPA, in particular, is needed to counter the inflammatory properties of excess omega-6 (arachidonic acid (AA)) consumed in our diets. The Oxford-Durham Study⁶

The only study to look specifically at high EPA oil in children was published in May 2005. Children were assigned to either a high EPA omega-3 oil (providing 558mg EPA and 174mg DHA per day) versus a placebo. All behaviors assessed by the scientists improved among children receiving the high EPA omega-3 oil, while there was no marked improvement among children receiving the placebo. A subset of the children was assessed with ADHD at the start of the trial. Almost 50% of the ADHD children receiving the high EPA omega-3 oil no longer met the criteria for ADHD after three months of supplementation.
